Grisons

Farmhouses in Grisons and the Engadine

The living quarters and stalls are combined to form one structural unit. The entrance through the large doorway leads to the “Suler”, a type of yard in the house. The animals’ stalls are reached via the Suler.
The façade is often divided asymmetrically by a somewhat stepped back section and the white lime plaster is decorated with painting. The attractive “Sgaffitoschmuck” (scraped rendering), which is extremely durable in this dry climate, can also very frequently be found here.

The core of the houses, for the most part, also comprised a block construction and a Feuerhaus [kitchen] in brickwork. The entire house was then encased with masonry.
